Art by Snapchat
is a dance performance produced for the first time in collaboration with the Museum of Modern Art of New York. In this work, Brendan Fernandes reconnects with the historic exhibition Art by Telephone (MCA, Chicago, 1969), for which some ‘60s conceptual artists sent the instructions for creating their works in the gallery via telephone. The work of Fernandes refers particularly to Bruce Nauman’s contribution, in which the artist communicated a choreography to the performers by telephone. The work investigates the ways in which institutional spaces guide the behaviour and rituals of the observers. Using the popular, ephemeral medium of Snapchat instead of the information system of the ‘60s artists, Art by Snapchat assesses the legacy and persistence of these artists’ practices of intervention, exploring the wholly new permeability of the institutional space which contemporary technology has made possible.
