Giona A. Nazzaro and Makinarium
The body of horror

Giona A. Nazzaro, professor of history of the film, three-year course in media design and multimedia arts, NABA

From the late ‘60s on, the representation of the body underwent a dramatic change. Echoing the new aesthetic and political ideas affecting the whole of society, the body too, as object and sign and cinematographic sign, gradually freed itself of the prohibitions and denials imposed by the codes of self-censorship. Through the work of creators and artists such as Dick Smith, Rick Baker, Rob Bottin and others, the Hollywood industry was redefined through the new frontiers of the visible, explored and opened up by the talent of these craftsmen of stupor, enchantment and creativity.  The lesson, which will be conducted in the presence and with the contribution of Makinarium, will illustrate how Italy also managed to establish its “fiction” and “fantasy” industry from these much earlier intuitions and results. The artists of Makinarium will themselves illustrate their creative evolution and the bonds which link them to their US and Italian predecessors.
