Along with other 48 models of various stages in the development of the human foetus and the other four on display here showing the development of the face, these ten wax models were made in the late-Nineteenth Century by German wax sculptor Friedrich Ziegler and show the development of the male and female sexual organs. By comparing the two different sexes, it is possible to follow the growth phases of the male and female anatomical structures, which begin their development from a common matrix.
The four models presented here were made by Friedrich Ziegler and show the most important stages of development of the face in a foetus. Together with other 48 models of foetal development, they were acquired by the university of Naples at the end of the Nineteenth Century for the Museo di Anatomia Veterinaria. They were bought from the renowned Ziegler laboratory, which was specialised in the production of ceroplastic anatomical preparations for scientific use. Founded in Freiburg in 1852 by Adolf Ziegler (1820-1889), the laboratory reached international success under the direction of Ziegler’s son, Friedrich. The pieces have recently been restored by Federica Dal Forno.
